Microneedling – to roll or not to roll!
In this blog, we’ll be diving into the topic of microneedling at home. Microneedling has gained popularity in recent years for its ability to rejuvenate the skin and improve various skin concerns. Traditionally performed in clinics and spas, microneedling is now also a fantastic, effective treatment to carry out at home. Let’s explore this exciting trend and understand how you can achieve professional results in the comfort of your own home.
Microneedling: An Overview
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves puncturing the skin with tiny needles to stimulate collagen production and enhance skin texture. The process creates microchannels in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing response and promoting the production of new collagen and elastin fibres. Using a face serum at the same time means the product can get deeper into your skin.
Why Microneedling at Home?
The convenience and privacy of performing microneedling at home has attracted many beauty enthusiasts. By incorporating this technique into your skincare routine, you can address various concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, large pores and overall skin texture. However, it’s important to note that at-home microneedling devices are typically less powerful than those used in professional settings, so the results may vary. The purpose of at-home microneedling is to help active ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin, resulting in better product efficacy thereby ensuring your skincare works as hard as possible.
Choosing the Right Microneedling Device
When selecting an at-home microneedling device, consider the following factors:
- Needle Length: A home device should not be longer than 0.25 mm
- Quality and Safety: Ensure the device is made of high-quality materials and is made by a reputable brand. Safety should always be a priority.
Preparation and Procedure
Cleanse your face thoroughly to remove any makeup, dirt, or oils. Make sure the roller is sterilised according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply your chosen serum before use, then apply the derma-roller with a gentle and even pressure. Go over the area in an asterisk motion: up and down, diagonally left up to right, and diagonally right up to left across your entire face. I pay particular attention to the crows feet around my eyes and the lines above my upper lip. Afterwards, massage any leftover product into your skin. The best time to do microneedling is before bed as part of your night time routine. This enables the active ingredients in your products to penetrate your skin whilst you are asleep. Also it is best not to wear makeup afterwards, another reason why doing it at night is better. It is vitally important not to not overdo it as you don’t want to inflame your skin, start with once a week and build up to 2-3 times a week. Be prepared that your skin may tingle or sting a little.
Post-Treatment Care
After microneedling, it’s crucial to care for your skin properly:
- Apply a soothing serum or a hyaluronic acid-based product to aid in skin hydration and recovery.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen when going outdoors.
- Do not use any harsh or irritating skincare products for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
- Cleanse your microneedling device thoroughly and store it in a clean, dry place.
Safety Precautions
While microneedling at home can be safe and effective, it’s important to keep the following precautions in mind:
- Follow the instructions provided by the device manufacturer carefully.
- Do not share your microneedling device with others to prevent cross-contamination.
- If you have any underlying skin conditions or are uncertain about the suitability of microneedling for your skin, consult a dermatologist or skincare professional.
